After a brief hiatus from the throne, Novak Djokovic is set to once again reign supreme as the World No. 1 on the ATP Tour.
The 2023 Miami Open has proven to be a pivotal moment in the ATP Rankings, with Jannik Sinner's semi-final victory over Carlos Alcaraz clearing the path for Djokovic's return to the summit despite missing out on competing at the Sunshine Double.
The young Spaniard had recently dethroned Djokovic by securing his third ATP Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells. However, the pressure to retain his position at the top proved too much as he faltered in Miami, where he was defending 1000 points from his 2022 triumph. As a result, Djokovic will be ascending to the No. 1 spot, marking his 381st week at the pinnacle of the tennis world.
At the moment, the Serb is gearing up for his return to the ATP Tour at the Monte-Carlo Masters, which starts on April 9th. His eyes will undoubtedly be set on further solidifying his position at the top, as he seeks to add more silverware to his already illustrious career.
Despite the brief interruption, Carlos Alcaraz's tenure as World No. 1 has been impressive for the 19-year-old. In his young career, he has spent 21 weeks in the top position, ranking 16th among the 28 players who have ever achieved this feat.
Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner's exceptional performance at the Miami Open has catapulted him to the ATP Live Rankings' No. 9 position. Should the Italian conquer Daniil Medvedev in the final match at Hard Rock Stadium, he will attain a career-high ranking of No. 6. On the other hand, if Medvedev emerges victorious, the Russian will claim No. 4 in the rankings. The Italian was happy after his semifinal win and motivated for the final, saying:
"It means a lot. We both played a very, very high level of tennis again. I just tried my best. In the third set I saw him struggle a little bit for a couple of games so I tried to push there... We both tried to play very aggressive tennis and today it went my way so I'm very happy."
