Young Federer's Struggles: How Doubt Shaped Tennis Legend We Know Today

Roger Federer looked back on his childhood in a talk with FT Globetrotter as the shooting of a commercial with friend Trevor Noah took him back down memory lane.

Federer grew up in Switzerland a country which is very close to his heart. He's living there despite the chance to live anywhere in the world and it shows the special bond he has with the country. There is a reason he always came back to his hometown of Basel to play tennis all those years, and it's because he's always yearned for Switzerland.

It’s been wonderful. Doing this commercial today with Trevor really brought me back to my childhood a little bit because I was always on trains. I remember leaving home, looking out of the window and seeing the trees and the fields go by and thinking, you know, will I be a good tennis player? Will I not? Will I win? Will I not?

Seeing Federer remember a time when he contemplated whether his tennis career would amount to much is funny because to many it was pretty clear that he'd become really great. It wasn't so convincing back in his youth because he was never considered the top youngster or some extraordinary talent.

He's keen to bring that love of Switzerland to his children as well as he already makes the familiar with the culture and mindset. They spend a lot of time in nature and there aren't many countries that can offer the type of nature Switzerland can do.

I hope I can do it as well as my children. I’ve taken them on some ‘monster hikes’ we call them in the family. I remember, when I came down, my knees were shaking because I was actually rehabbing back in ’16 and ’17 and was not ready for such a huge hike. I underestimated the hike. As I was coming down, we were all like, ‘Oh my God! This was too far.
