Taylor Fritz became visibly emotional when speaking about being away from his son during events and not having him at tournaments.
Fritz has a son named Jordan, born in January 2017, with his ex-wife Raquel Pedraza. He and Pedraza divorced in December 2019, and the tennis star now dates the influencer Morgan Riddle.
Although Fritz and Riddle seem to have a great time together throughout the tennis season, as Riddle documents on social media, many have noticed that Fritz's son is never with him at any of his matches.
All athletes should be entitled to a private life, especially regarding their kids. Nonetheless, that has not stopped some online accounts from creating baseless and unpleasant rumors about him being an uncaring father.
Fritz discussed the situation at a Wimbledon press conference. A reporter asked a good and fair question about whether it is challenging to be away from his son, noting that mothers in tennis receive deserved praise, but fathers also face challenges.
The video below clearly shows Fritz's pain when discussing the distance from his son. Last year's US Open runner-up wishes the season were shorter so he could spend more time with Jordan and implied that details of his divorce from Pedraza prevent him from coming to tournaments.
"I wish the season was shorter for a lot of reasons, and that's a big one. When I go home, I do the best I can in terms of maximizing the amount of time I can spend with my son."
"I wish it was an easier situation where I can bring him in on Tour with me, but there's things preventing me from doing that. I wish there was an easy fix for that, but there's not. I just need, like I said, to maximize the time I can spend with him. Also, just Facetime calling him when I'm on the road."
It is impossible not to feel sympathy for Fritz. His answer to that one question proves beyond any reasonable doubt that any speculation about him being an absent or uncaring father is entirely false.
Fritz has posted photos with his son on social media when he can see him. The closeness between the pair is evident, with Jorfan thrilled when his father is home for days or weeks at a time.
Jordan probably watches his father regularly on television. Fritz is enjoying a career to be proud of, and has established himself as the most consistent American ATP player during the last few years.
Jannik Sinner's hard-court brilliance prevented Fritz from winning the finals of the 2024 US Open and the 2024 ATP Finals. The world No. 1 has been the best player on hard courts by far in the last few years, making those losses understandable.
Fritz still has a lot of time left in his career to win a maiden Grand Slam. The 27-year-old's game has become more complete in the last few years, and he will undoubtedly continue working to get even better.
