Two clay-court tournaments are played on the
WTA Tour the week after Wimbledon. One of these is the 2025
Hamburg Open, scheduled from July 14th to 20th.
The tournament will return to the WTA 250 level after being downgraded to a 125K last year. Disruption to the scheduled caused by the 2024 Paris Olympics was one of the reasons for this.
This year's edition should be highly entertaining.
Yulia Putintseva must be desperate for a return to form in Hamburg.
Jessica Pegula's loss at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships was the biggest women's upset, but what happened in Putintseva's opening round also caused widespread shock.
Amanda Anisimova dismantled the Kazakhstani 6-0, 6-0 at SW19. It was a stunning fall from grace for Putintseva after she overcame Iga Swiatek in last year's third round with one of the best performances of her career.
Hopefully, that defeat is out of Putintseva's head when she competes in Hamburg. A WTA 250 on clay feels like one of her best chances to reach a final and regain some momentum after a challenging season.
German fans will undoubtedly give home player
Tatjana Maria much support. The veteran won the biggest title of her career at the 2025 Queen's Club Championships, but lost 6-3, 6-7, 1-6 to the gritty Katie Volynets in the opening round at Wimbledon.
Dayana Yastremska,
Xinyu Wang, who beat Coco Gauff at the 2025 Berlin Open before the American exited in the opening round at Wimbledon, and Eva Lys are among the other players who will compete for the highest share of the $275,094
prize money pot.
The 2025 Hamburg Open winner will earn $36,300 and 250 points. Anna Bondar is the defending champion, having comfortably defeated 2023 winner Arantxa Rus in last year's final with a clinical performance.
$21,484 and 163 points are the rewards on offer for this year's runner-up. Since the entry list does not contain any Top 20 players, availing of that many ranking points could make a significant difference to players who have committed to the tournament.
The two defeated semifinalists will claim $11,970 and 98 ranking points. Olga Danilovic, who has been to the fourth round at Roland Garros, was one of the two players who fell at last year's semifinal stage.
$6,820 and 54 points will be given to the four women who lose in the quarterfinals. Two victories are needed for all players to achieve that, since no byes are given to players at WTA 250 tournaments.
Just one main draw win is needed to make the round of 16. Players who reach that stage without going any further will walk away from the tournament with $4,470 and 30 points. 2023 finalist Noma Noha Akugue lost at that stage last year.
$3,110 will be added to the bank accounts of players who are beaten in the opening round. These women receive one ranking point, and some wonder why the WTA does not award no points instead.
The 2025 Iasi Open is the other tournament played during that week.
Maria Sakkari is among the players on the entry list for the Romanian event.
