Ben Shelton was understandably furious after a ridiculous decision was made during his second-round match at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.
Shelton easily passed his first-round match at this year's Wimbledon Championships despite losing four consecutive matches on the low-bouncing surface before the grass-court Grand Slam.
He beat Alex Bolt in straight sets to set up a meeting with another Australian, Rinky Hijikata, in the second round of the event. The match was scheduled as the last match on the No. 2 Court, which meant players had to wait quite some time before getting a chance to play.
Alex de Minaur beat Arthur Cazaux in four sets, Luciano Darderi needed only three sets to beat Arthur Fery, but women's defending champion Barbora Krejcikova needed three sets to beat Caroline Dolehide. The fourth match on the court saw Jessica Bouzas Maneiro beat Sofia Kenin in straight sets.
After that match, Shelton and Hijikata finally got a chance to step onto the court. The American player knew that he might battle the darkness, so wanting to finish the match quickly, he didn't wait around in the first set.
Shelton won the opening set of the match 6-2, and despite taking some time to break his opponent's serve in the second set, the 22-year-old won that set 7-5, leading 2-0 after two sets played.
At the time when the third set of the match started, a match between Gael Monfils and Marton Fucsovics on a different court was suspended because of darkness. The players were about to start the fifth set of that match.
However, the match between Shelton and Hijikata continued, and the American player showed his intent to finish the match on Thursday by breaking his opponent's serve in the first game of the third set.
But during the set, it became obvious that darkness might be too big of a factor, with players pleading with the umpire of the match, Nacho Forcadell, to suspend it and postpone it to Friday.
Yet, that didn't happen, and the play continued. Shelton continued holding his serve, and at 5-3, he had three consecutive match points, leading 40-0 on his opponent's serve.
Hijikata then miraculously won five consecutive points to hold his serve, and with Shelton preparing to serve out the match, the umpire shockingly announced that the match would be postponed until Friday.
Shelton obviously wasn't happy with that decision, especially since he was only one service game away from a win. Having to return to the court on Friday could significantly derail his preparations for his third-round match.
The match will finish on the No. 2 Court as the second match of Friday's schedule. The players will return to the court after the match between Naomi Osaka and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
