After playing her first event in more than 2 months in San Jose, Naomi Osaka returned to WTA 1000 event in Toronto but she was forced to retire due to an injury.

The 4-time Grand Slam champion faced Kaia Kanepi who played in the final against Liudmila Samsonova last week in Washington. Her opponent got the better start in the match, but Naomi Osaka eventually managed to get the set into the tie-break.

After trading mini-breaks, it was eventually Kanepi who got the final one and won the set 7-4 in the tie-break. In the second set, the Estonian won 12 out of 15 points played and after that, Osaka retired from the match.

It seems like the former world number 1 was struggling with lower back pain and that might changer her plans for the upcoming weeks. Osaka is set to play in Cincinnati and then at the 2022 US Open where she triumphed twice before, but her participation is now in doubt.
