The 2024
Roland Garros is the second Grand Slam tournament of the tennis season, and details of
prize money and points allocation have been released.
Like the other three major tournaments, Roland Garros will offer equal prize money for all the
ATP and
WTA players competing in the qualifying and main draw rounds. However, the points distribution will differ slightly between the
two tours in certain rounds.
The entry list for
the men's tournament contains all the heavyweights. World No. 1
Novak Djokovic will pursue his fourth title at the event and look to become the first tennis player
to win 25 Grand Slams in singles.
14-time champion
Rafael Nadal's participation at the event is uncertain because of a persistent injury. The legendary Spaniard revealed that he would decide whether to play
after playing at the Italian Open in Rome.
Jannik Sinner is the only man capable of winning the Calendar Grand Slam after lifting the year's first major at the Australian Open.
Carlos Alcaraz, meanwhile, will look to go one better than last year's
semi-final defeat to Djokovic.
Players such as
Alexander Zverev,
Stefanos Tsitsipas, and two-time finalist
Casper Ruud will also be among those who will be favored to reach the business end of the tournament.
The women's tournament is led by three-time champion
Iga Swiatek. The Pole has won the last two editions and whoever will dethrone her as champion will likely be the new custodian of the crown.
Swiatek's immediate challengers include Australian Open champion
Aryna Sabalenka, US Open champion
Coco Gauff, and 2022 Wimbledon champion
Elena Rybakina. Players like
Ons Jabeur,
Marketa Vondrousova, and
Maria Sakkari, who have clay-court pedigrees, will also contend.
This year's prize money stands at a lucrative €53.5 million, to be distributed equally for both tours. It represents an increase of at least 7.8% from last year's purse. This is also the biggest pay package in French Open history.
The men's and women's champions will each receive €2.4 million in paychecks and 2000 points. The defeated finalists will pocket €1.2 million and 1300 points each.
Disparity in points occurs from the second round stage to the semifinal. Those who fall in the seminal stage will earn €650,000 along with 800 ATP points and 780 WTA points.
Quarterfinalists are guaranteed to walk away with €415,000, with the men's players getting 400 points and the women's 430 points. Players who make it to the second week but lose in the fourth round will earn €250,000. Additionally, ATP players get 200 points, and WTA players get 240 points.
Main draw remuneration begins at an impressive €73,000 for a first-round defeat, but these players only receive 10 ranking points. Those who make it to the second round will bank €110,000, along with 50 ATP points and 70 WTA points. The full prize money and points distribution for the 2024 Roland Garros can be seen below.
