The Australian United Cup team is facing some serious problems as both highest-ranked players withdrew from the event.
First, the biggest Australian ATP star, Nick Kyrgios pulled out from the tournament. He was subsequently blamed by the team captain Lleyton Hewitt for 'lack of communication'. On top of that, Australia lost the opening tie to the United Kingdom 2-3.
But their loss wasn't only to blame on the supposed 'lack of communication' from Kyrgios. Shortly before her match, Australian WTA no. 1, Ajla Tomljanovic also withdrew from the event. She was then replaced by Maddison Inglis, who lost to Harriet Dart in two sets.
When the 2022 Wimbledon finalist noticed the late withdrawal of his ex-girlfriend, he remembered comments from the team captain and reacted: "Mmm I wonder if Stosur will throw her under the bus like our captain did for me….. ‘hard to prepare when you don’t know what’s going on’"
Kyrgios was mentioning Sam Stosur because she is the team captain with Lleyton Hewitt as they have split their roles for ATP and WTA players.
