Alexander Zverev was happy about his performance at the World Tennis League in Dubai as he was part of the winning team.
It's been quite some time since the German played a professional match on the ATP Tour, as he was absent for the big part of the 2022 season due to an injury sustained at the Roland Garros during his semifinal clash against Rafael Nadal.
Since then, Zverev already made a return to the tennis courts. Recently, he competed at the Diriyah Tennis Cup, which is an exhibition tournament, where he lost to Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals of the tournament.
A couple of weeks after that, he took part in another exhibition event, this time a team event, the 2022 World Tennis League. At the event, he bested Novak Djokovic and Andreas Seppi before losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime, contributing to his team's success.
Zverev was a vital part of his team's run to the trophy at the World Tennis League and it was a great way to return to tennis. After the event, the German shared that he was very happy to return to tennis and win at least some trophy.
“I’m happy that I won something this year. It’s been a rough year for me, obviously I haven’t played in six and a half months, so to finish the year off like that is amazing for me and the whole team."
Looking ahead, the 2023 season should be a great year for Zverev, especially if he can reach the level he had before he got injured. It's a long journey, but he will be ready for it, something that his World Tennis League campaign showed, especially, beating arguably one of the best tennis players in history, Novak Djokovic.
In 2023, it will be mostly about getting back to speed for Zverev with as many competitive matches as possible.
