Alexander Zverev played already one match at the 2022 Diriyah Tennis Cup, but for Medvedev, it was his first showing since this year's ATP Finals, and he was victorious.
The 2022 Diriyah Tennis Cup started well for the German, who defeated Dominic Thiem in the opening match. However, in the quarter-finals, he faced Medvedev, and the Russian was really determined to advance as he started the match in an incredible way.
Despite facing a break point in the first game and also in the third, Medvedev kept his composure and upped his level on the return. He managed to create five break point chances in the first set, and after using three of those, he won it 6-0.
He dominated his opponent, who struggled on his serve. Zverev hit five double faults, and he also won only 44% of points after his first serve, which is not a good enough mark against the former ATP World No. 1 player.
In the second set, Zverev managed to play much better as he used his only break point and led already 3-1, maybe even starting to think about a comeback.
Yet, Medvedev managed to break back to make it 3-all, and when the German was serving to stay in the match, he couldn't handle the pressure and lost the game to love, losing the match shockingly easily, 0-6, 4-6.
Despite the loss, Zverev will be certainly happy that he managed to play two competitive matches against solid opponents. On the other hand, the second-seeded Medvedev will focus on his semi-final clash with Stan Wawrinka, who defeated Andrey Rublev, and has been playing some inspired tennis at the event so far.
Medvedev is among the top favorites to win the tournament, and with the draw clearing up, he might have a real shot at the trophy.
