It seems that Stan Wawrinka used a time machine in Saudi Arabia as he's showing his best tennis once again.
The 37-year-old Swiss joined the 2022 Diriyah Tennis Cup as the lowest-ranked player, but he already made it to the Final Four with two wins in one day.
He started by coming back from one set down against Matteo Berrettini before taking on the third-seeded Andrey Rublev. His match against Berrettini was in the best-of-three match tie-breaks format, so he beat the Italian player 5-10, 10-4, 10-6.
In the quarter-final, it was already a proper match, and both players served well in the first set as fans at the 2022 Diriyah Tennis Cup saw only two break points.
Each player had one chance, but after they failed to use it, a tie-break had to decide the first set. The Russian was the better player in the tie-break as he got three mini-breaks, while his opponent got only one and won it 7-3 to get an important lead.
However, in the second set, Wawrinka started his second comeback of the day. The Swiss player broke his opponent twice in a row and soon he was up 4-0 and 40-15 with two more break points as he was hoping to bagel his opponent in the second set.
Yet, that didn't happen, but Wawrinka still comfortably won the second set 6-2. Since the Diriyah Tennis Cup is an exhibition event, if the score is tied at 1-1, the match is decided by a match tie-break.
After losing a classic tie-break in the first set, Wawrinka showed his experience in the third set and won the match tie-break 10-6 to win the match 6-7(3), 6-2, 10-6.
He will be waiting for the winner of the match between Alexander Zverev and the second-seeded Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals of the 2022 Diriyah Tennis Cup.
