The players competing at the 2025 ASB Classic in Auckland learned the draw for the ATP 250 tournament held in New Zealand.
Thanks to New Zealand's proximity to Australia, the ASB Classic in Auckland is often a chosen destination for players to begin their season. First, a WTA event is held in the city, and then men compete for the trophy a week before the Australian Open.
The 2025 ASB Classic runs from January 6th until 11th. Last year's tournament was surprisingly won by Alejandro Tabilo, who will return as the defending champion in 2025.
The Chilean player will be the second seed, and his draw shaped up perfectly. Like all top four seeded players, he has a first-round bye, and in the second round, Tabilo will play against one of the qualifiers.
His possible quarter-final opponent, however, won't be that easy. The eighth-seeded Alex Michelsen will start against one of the qualifiers, with the winner playing against either Gabriel Diallo or Lorenzo Sonego.
The winner from this section will play against the winner of Tabilo's section in the quarter-final of the tournament. The best of these players might face an even bigger challenge in the semi-final.
The fifth-seeded Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard will start against Yunchaokete Bu, with the winner taking on the winner of the match between Pedro Martinez and Gael Monfils.
The third-seeded Sebastian Baez will start with a first-round bye, but his second-round opponent can be former Wimbledon semi-finalist Cameron Norrie, who will play against one of the qualifiers in the first round.
The top seed, Ben Shelton, played in an exhibition event against Carlos Alcaraz during the off-season, and he will be well aware of his qualities ahead of the new season.
Those will be tested already in the second round. The big-serving American will take on either Jakub Mensik or Alexandre Muller, who received a special exempt entry thanks to his run into the final of the Hong Kong Open.
Another special exempt entry went to Reilly Opelka, who reached the final of the Brisbane International, even eliminating Novak Djokovic along the way.
Opelka's first-round opponent will be Mariano Navone, with the winner of this match taking on the winner of the meeting between the seventh-seeded Nuno Borges and Luciano Darderi.
