Pedro Martinez was born on April 26, 1997, in Alizira, Spain, to Pedro Luis and Dolores. He began playing tennis at Club de Tenis Alzira. Martinez’s idol growing up was his countryman David Ferrer.
After winning several titles on the ITF Futures Circuit, Martinez began competing regularly on the ATP Challenger Tour from 2018 until the end of 2020. During that time, he reached five finals, winning two of them in Bastad and Marbella.
Although he was mostly competing on the Challenger Tour in 2020, Martinez had an unexpected run to the third round of the French Open during that year as a qualifier. He recorded straight-set victories against Aleksandar Vukic and Mikhail Kukushkin before exiting to Sebastian Korda.
Martinez made his first appearance in an ATP Tour final in Kitzbuhel in July 2021. He achieved this by winning against Lucas Pouille, Roberto Bautista Agut, Jozef Kovalik, and Daniel Altmaier. The Spaniard pushed the future French Open finalist Casper Ruud to three sets in the final but ultimately lost 1-6, 6-4, 3-6.
The 2021 season also saw Martinez show his credentials outside his favored clay with runs to the third round of the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Those efforts saw him end the year with a ranking of No. 60. Martinez then claimed his maiden ATP Tour title in February 2022 at the Chile Open.
He got to the final with triumphs against Jaume Munar, Yannick Hanfmann, and Alejandro Tabilo. That was followed by an epic battle with Sebastian Baez, but Martinez was not to be denied. He lifted the trophy by overcoming the Argentinian 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
However, the Spaniard’s level fell dramatically after that achievement. This led to Martinez exiting the Top 100 in 2023 before he found some form at the end of that year by winning two Challenger Tour titles in Brest and Maspalomas.
Martinez built on that momentum to have a strong start to 2024. The high point was progressing to his third ATP Tour final in Estoril, losing the final 3-6, 4-6 to Hubert Hurkacz.
