The draw for the 2025 Rio Open is set. Alexander Zverev will be the top seed at the ATP 500 event in Brazil.
The second leg of the popular Golden Swing will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. First, players competed at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires before moving to Rio for the ATP 500 event, which runs from February 17th to 23rd.
Holger Rune is one of the players who competed in Buenos Aires, and he was supposed to be the second seed in Rio. However, the Danish player withdrew from the event after struggling with flu.
That certainly disappointed the tournament organizers. But that's not all. In Rune's absence, Lorenzo Musetti is the second seed in Rio. However, the Italian player withdrew already from the Argentina Open ahead of his quarter-final match against Pedro Martinez.
Musetti still appears in the Rio Open draw as the second seed, and he's set to start against a qualifier, but it wouldn't be surprising if he withdrew from the event.
His withdrawal would certainly benefit players in the bottom part of the draw. For example, the winner of an all-Spanish match between Pedro Martinez and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina could see a relatively easy path to the semi-finals of the event.
But all the eyes will be on the top part of the draw, and that's because of multiple reasons. The first-seeded Alexander Zverev will start against Yunchaokete Bu in the first round of the tournament.
If the German player succeeds, his second-round opponent will be either Alexander Shevchenko or home wild card Felipe Meligeni Alves. And even though Zverev is a three-time Grand Slam finalist, there will be one player who will likely draw even bigger crowds than him.
18-year-old Joao Fonseca stole all of the spotlight at the ongoing Argentina Open. He reached the final in Buenos Aires, becoming the first player born in 2006 to reach an ATP final, and also the youngest ATP finalist since Carlos Alcaraz in 2021.
With the next event played in his hometown, the Brazilian teenager couldn't hope for better development. On top of that, the draw was relatively nice to him.
In the first round, Fonseca will play against Alexandre Muller. If he beats the Spaniard, he will play against either Corentin Moutet or Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who he beat in the first round in Buenos Aires.
In the quarter-finals of the tournament, Fonseca's opponent could be the fourth-seeded Francisco Cerundolo, who will be his opponent in the final of the Argentina Open.
