Nuno Borges was born in Maia, Portugal, on February 19, 1997, to his parents, Virginia and Paolo. His father was a national volleyball champion in Portugal. From the age of six, Borges enjoyed swimming and tennis. However, despite being good at both sports, he eventually pursued a tennis career over swimming.
In 2016, Borges moved from Portugal to Mississippi State University, United States, where he studied kinesiology. He also continued his tennis development here and reached the 2019 NCAA singles final. En route to the final, Borges notched a 31-match win streak at the collegiate level.
After graduating, Borges played several events and won four consecutive titles at this level between June 2019 and September 2020. In 2021, Borges made his first Challenger title at the Open de Oeiras but lost against Pedro Cachin.
He then made his ATP debut at the Estoril Open and beat Jordan Thompson in round one before losing to Marin Cilic. Borges ended 2021 in positive form, making two Challenger finals and winning the Antalya Challenger. The Portuguese also performed extremely well in doubles at Challenger events alongside Francisco Cabral. The pair won six Challenger doubles titles in 2021.
2022 was a consistent season for Borges, and he made the main draws at the Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open. He also knocked out Ben Shelton in round one at Flushing Meadows for his maiden Grand Slam win. Moreover, he played well again with Cabral in doubles. The duo won the 2022 Estoril Open - Borges’ first ATP title.
Following strong form, Borges ended 2022 inside the ATP’s Top 100 in singles and the Top 70 in doubles. The Portuguese went from strength to strength in singles during the 2023 campaign. Borges made his Australian Open debut but lost in round one against Lorenzo Sonego. However, he recovered by winning the Monterrey and Phoenix Challenger events within a month.
More landmarks came at the Miami Open, where Borges made his Masters debut, while he followed this feat with main draw appearances at the Madrid Open and the Italian Open in Rome. Borges started 2024 with his best-ever Grand Slam run.
At the 2024 Australian Open, the Portuguese progressed to round four. He defeated Maximilian Marterer, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and Grigor Dimitrov in this run. Borges then defended his Phoenix Challenger title in March, beating Matteo Berrettini in the final.
