The 2025
Bastad Open will occur from July 14th to 20th, immediately after Wimbledon, and the
entry list for the Swedish event has been unveiled.
Last year's
ATP 250 tournament in Bastad received more attention than usual because of Rafael Nadal's involvement. The legendary Spaniard played to get match practice before the 2024 Olympics at Roland Garros.
Nadal reached what turned out to be the last final of his career. He lost 2-6, 3-6 to
Nuno Borges in a match that showed how difficult it would be for the 14-time French Open champion to challenge at the biggest tournaments again.
Nadal retired four months later.
Many other excellent players have won the Bastad Open. Casper Ruud secured the title in 2021,
Andrey Rublev managed it in 2023, and David Ferrer was a three-time champion at the clay-court tournament.
Although this year's entry list may not look as strong on paper, some great players are still on it. There should be much enjoyable tennis for the fans to enjoy when the tournament begins next month.
Grigor Dimitrov is among those on the entry list. He has not played since the opening round of Roland Garros over three weeks ago, when he retired in the third set against Ethan Quinn with a thigh injury.
Incredibly, that was Dimitrov's fourth consecutive retirement at a Grand Slam. The Bulgarian set an unwanted record in the process, raising questions about whether the 34-year-old's body can hold up in the modern game.
Hopefully, Dimitrov will be fit and ready for the Bastad Open. The 2017 ATP Finals winner has not withdrawn from Wimbledon and is currently doing everything he can to be fit for the third Grand Slam of the season.
Hubert Hurkacz is another name on the entry list. Although the Pole probably prefers playing on hard and grass courts, he has also attained solid results on clay, including winning a maiden title on the dirt at the 2024 Estoril Open.
Hurkacz's second clay-court final at last month's 2025 Geneva Open was memorable. After a titanic battle,
Novak Djokovic overcame his huge-serving opponent in a deciding set tiebreak to claim a 100th ATP title.
Francisco Cerundolo might fancy his chances of challenging for the Bastad Open title. Five of the 26-year-old's six ATP finals have come on the dirt, and he reached the 2023 and 2024 French Open fourth round.
The Argentine reached the semifinals of the 2025 Madrid Open. However, he also suffered one of the 2025 French Open's biggest upsets, falling to the Canadian Gabriel Diallo in the opening round.
Tallon Griekspoor, another man on the Bastad Open entry list, is always an entertaining player to watch. The former world No. 21 achieved his best result at a Grand Slam at Roland Garros a few weeks ago, reaching the fourth round.
Botic van de Zandschulp, who beat Nadal in his final professional match at the 2024 Davis Cup Finals, Nuno Borges, Luciano Darderi, and Sebastian Baez are some of the other players on the Bastad Open entry list.
