Some top players are on the
entry list for the 2025
Swiss Open, one of three tournaments occurring during the week after the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.
The Bastad Open will run during the same week, as it also did in 2023 and 2024. A significant change is also having the Los Cabos Open, usually held during February, in that week, adding a hard-court tournament as an option for players.
Several great players have won the Swiss Open, including Roger Federer, recently retired French tennis legend Richard Gasquet, Dominic Thiem, Alex Corretja, and Sergi Bruguera.
The quality of the Swiss Open entry lists in recent years has fluctuated. 2023, when Pedro Cachin won the title, did not have the star quality of that year's Bastad Open, but more top players featured last year in Gstaad.
Matteo Berrettini secured the 2024 Swiss Open title, one of three clay-court titles the Italian won last year. He thrived on the dirt under the guidance of Rafael Nadal's former team member, Francisco Roig.
Many were surprised when
Berrettini and Roig split in the closing stages of 2024. The 2021 Wimbledon runner-up had mixed results this season before missing Roland Garros with a right oblique injury.
Due to that injury, Berrettini faces a race to be fit for Wimbledon. This means the 29-year-old's participation to defend his Gstaad title cannot be guaranteed despite his being on the tournament's entry list.
Alexander Zverev is set to be the No. 1 seed if he competes at the Swiss Open. Most players near the very top take a break after Wimbledon, but the
ATP world No. 3 has committed to an event starting immediately after Wimbledon.
Cynics might think that Zverev's appearance on the Gstaad entry list indicates that he does not seriously believe he will go far at Wimbledon. The German has never been past the fourth round of the grass-court Grand Slam.
Two-time Swiss Open champion
Casper Ruud will return to the tournament after missing last year's iteration because he appeared in Bastad instead. The Norwegian's 2024 Bastad Open campaign included playing doubles with Rafael Nadal.
Ruud's severe struggles on grass and love for clay mean he might be the only top player who prioritizes an ATP 250 on the dirt more than Wimbledon. The 26-year-old is yet to reach the Wimbledon third round, but has won 12 of his 13 ATP titles on clay.
Alexander Bublik's place on the entry list might be due to the Kazakhstani's unexpected run to the quarterfinals at this year's Roland Garros. He previously did not like clay, but signing up for the Swiss Open indicates he wants to play on the surface again as soon as possible.
Marin Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion, is also on the entry list. Despite not being in his prime anymore, Cilic showed what he could still do by
becoming the lowest-ranked ATP titlist ever in September 2024 at the Hangzhou Open.
