One of the relationships between tennis players recently ended after Alexander Shevchenko and Anastasia Potapova's divorce.
Relationships between ATP and WTA players are relatively uncommon, which means they generate much attention from fans and the media. However, there are some notable examples of successful relationships between players.
Roger Federer and his wife Mirka is a high-profile case. Her husband being one of the most successful tennis players ever means some fans are unaware that Mirka also used to be a professional.
She got to the third round of the US Open third round and reached a career-high of No. 76 during the same season. A foot injury led to Mirka retiring and taking up a role as Federer's public relations manager.
Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi are among the most well-known sports couples in the world. Graf won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, which puts her tied for second on the all-time list with Serena Williams, while Agassi won eight major crowns.
Agassi and Graf will compete together at Pickleball Slam 3 against Eugenie Bouchard and Andy Roddick. Bouchard hilariously responded to Agassi, saying he and Graf would probably target Roddick by calling him scared of her.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa are a current example of a tennis couple. The pair does not hide their love for each other, and they have done interviews together to describe what makes their relationship tick.
Badosa recalled how supportive Tsitispas was in the second half of 2023 when the Spaniard was sidelined with a severe back injury. Due to that physical injury, she missed all tournaments in 2023 after the Wimbledon Championships.
Shevchenko and Potapova were on that list. 24-year-old Shevchenko and 23-year-old Potaova had been married for less than a year before the end of their relationship was confirmed, shocking tennis fans.
Potapova made her relationship with Shevchenko public on March 30th, 2023, which is also Potapova's birthday. She shared pictures of the pair celebrating her special day while looking content together.
Potapova revealed in June 2023 that the pair had been together for six months. They had chosen to keep their relationship private for the first few months before deciding her birthday was the perfect time to make it public.
The relationship progressed quickly afterward. Their engagement was announced in September 2024, and Potapova and Shevchenko tied the knot just a few months later, in December. They hoped to enjoy a lifetime of happiness together.
Sadly, that was not how things went. Potapova announced last month that she and Shevchenko had separated but did not want to reveal the precise details of why the pair felt divorcing was the right decision.
"Hello everyone. This time I have not very positive news. Unfortunately, Alexander and I have decided to separate. That's life. People come together and separate."
"We would like to keep the reasons for the divorce to ourselves. I kindly ask you not to ask us unnecessary questions on this topic and respect our decision. All the best and love! Your Nastya."
