The final ATP tournament before the 2025 US Open will be the 2025 Winston-Salem Open, which is scheduled from August 17th to 23rd. The entry list for the event has been unveiled.
Players at the very top of the rankings usually do not play in Winston-Salem because of its proximity to the US Open. The impact of the new mixed doubles format being introduced at this year's Grand Slam has made it even more difficult to attract the best talent.
Rather than scheduling the mixed doubles with the singles and other doubles events from August 24th to September 7th, organizers created a new format to be held during the Fan Week to entice top singles players.
That approach has worked since most of the best ATP and WTA players have committed to the mixed doubles. Carlos Alcaraz, Emma Raducanu, Naomi Osaka, and Nick Kyrgios are among the confirmed pairs.
Consequently, no Top 20 ATP players are on the entry list for this year's Winston-Salem Open. The top-ranked man who has signed up is world No. 21 and highly talented Frenchman Arthur Fils.
After some promising results this season, the 21-year-old has not competed since beating Jaume Munar in the second round of the French Open in straight sets. He sustained a stress fracture in his back during that encounter.
Fils probably put himself on the Winston-Salem Open entry list because he fears being undercooked for the US Open when he returns. It is unclear which tournament the 2024 Hamburg Open champion plans to return to.
Sebastian Korda's situation is almost identical to Fils's. The American last played at the French Open and has been out since with a stress fracture in his right shin. That stopped him from defending his Citi Open title in Washington.
Korda returned from elbow surgery at the start of this season, immediately reaching the 2025 Adelaide International final. His results after that were mixed, and this latest injury prevented him from playing again.
Alex Michelsen was the runner-up at the 2024 Winston-Salem Open. He won some dramatic matches, including beating Christopher Eubanks in a deciding set tiebreak, before losing to Lorenzo Sonego in the final. The 20-year-old has a chance to go one better this year.
Sonego will return to defend his title. The Italian often slips under the radar, but he is capable of playing great tennis on all surfaces, as he showed during his dominant run to winning last year's Winston-Salem Open.
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard is someone other players in the draw will probably hope to avoid. His huge serve means the vast majority of matches involving him are decided by a few points, as was seen when Taylor Fritz needed five sets to beat him at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.
37-year-old Roberto Bautista Agut is also on the Winston-Salem Open entry list. The Spaniard's level at this late stage of his career has impressed many. An example was his recent run to the 2025 Queen's Club Championships semifinal.
David Goffin, Nuno Borges, Luciano Darderi, Jaume Munar, and 2023 champion Sebastian Baez are among the other players on the Winston-Salem Open entry list.
