The 2025
Cincinnati Open is one of nine
ATP Masters 1000 tournaments this season, and the
entry list for the event, which is scheduled from August 7th to 18th, has been released.
This year's Cincinnati Open will be the first with a 96-player draw. The event used to be only one week before the decision to expand it to 12 days, a format also introduced for the Italian Open, Madrid Open, and Canadian Open.
Many do not like the expanded combined ATP and WTA 1000-level tournaments because it removes some smaller events from the calendar. A section of fans also argues that the early stages of them are not interesting and that so many days are unnecessary.
Proponents of the format point to it being used to achieve equal prize money for ATP and WTA players at more tournaments, and that having the best male and female players competing together as often as possible is good.
Jannik Sinner is the defending men's singles champion at the Cincinnati Open. The world No. 1 overcame
Frances Tiafoe 7-6, 6-2 to win one of several titles during his successful and memorable 2024 season.
Sinner used that moment as ideal preparation for the 2024 US Open, which he won by beating Taylor Fritz in the final. That triumph was particularly impressive since his controversial doping case became public a few days before the season's final Grand Slam began.
The Italian has dominated on hard courts since the start of 2024, including securing the last three Grand Slams on them. Because of his superb record on the surface during the last 18 months, he is the favorite for all hard-court tournaments.
Carlos Alcaraz is the only man to consistently beat Sinner on all surfaces. Since the beginning of last year, the Spaniard has won their last five consecutive professional matches. Sinner beat him at the 2024 Six Kings Slam, but that does not count in their official head-to-head.
Alcaraz lost to Gael Monfils in the opening round of the 2024 Cincinnati Open. That setback and his second-round US Open defeat to Botic van de Zandschulp were almost certainly influenced by his inability to win the Gold Medal Match at the 2024 Olympics.
Novak Djokovic was the man who inflicted that painful moment on Alcaraz. His inclusion on the Cincinnati Open entry list is particularly notable since he often skips Masters tournaments, including last year's event in Cincinnati.
Djokovic and Alcaraz's 2023 Cincinnati Open battle was one of the best 1000-level finals ever played. The 24-time Grand Slam champion triumphed in a deciding set tiebreak after a contest of extraordinary quality.
Nick Kyrgios is on the entry list with a protected ranking.
The Australian missed the grass-court swing after suffering yet another injury setback, but wants to return for the North American hard-court swing.
Alexander Zverev hopes to find form again after
losing in the opening round of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. The world No. 3 has endured a challenging period since
Jannik Sinner beat him in the 2025 Australian Open final.
Ben Shelton,
Jack Draper, João Fonseca,
Matteo Berrettini,
Holger Rune, and last year's runner-up Frances Tiafoe are some of the other players on the 2025 Cincinnati Open ATP entry list.
