The 2025
Cincinnati Open, scheduled from August 7th to 18th, will be the final 1000-level tournament played before the 2025 US Open, and the
WTA entry list has already been unveiled.
Aryna Sabalenka started the 2024 North American hard-court swing earlier than many of her rivals after deciding to skip the 2024 Olympics. She failed to reach the final of the 2024 Citi Open or the 2024 Canadian Open.
The Cincinnati Open was when Sabalenka found the form that ultimately saw her win the 2024 US Open. She overcame
Jessica Pegula in the final with excellent serving in Cincinnati before beating the same opponent at Flushing Meadows a few weeks later.
Sabalenka will return to defend her title. The WTA world No. 1 has already reached seven finals in 2025, winning three of them. Four were on hard courts at the Brisbane International, Australian Open, Indian Wells Open, and Miami Open.
Although her season deserves to be considered a success after so many finals, Sabalenka has suffered some heartbreaking defeats, including
in the Australian Open final to Madison Keys and the French Open final to
Coco Gauff.
Pegula hopes to avenge last year's defeat. She has many points to defend during the North American hard-court swing after winning the 2024 Canadian Open, along with her runs to the Cincinnati Open and US Open finals.
The world No. 3 suffered a very disappointing defeat in the opening round of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships to Elisabetta Cocciaretto. She had been one of the Wimbledon favorites after winning the 2025 Bad Homburg Open, and will try to regroup on hard courts.
Pegula's final victory in Bad Homburg came against
Iga Swiatek.
The Pole was in tears after losing the first grass-court final of her career and first on any surface since triumphing at the 2024 French Open.
Rather than be disheartened by that defeat, Swiatek responded with great results at Wimbledon. The Cincinnati Open courts are usually fast, which has not suited her in the past, but the former world No. 1's results on grass show she can adapt.
Gauff won her maiden WTA 1000 title at the 2023 Cincinnati Open. The 22-year-old used that momentum to secure a maiden Grand Slam at the 2023 US Open a few weeks later, beating Sabalenka in the final.
She suffered an early exit at last year's iteration. That might have been an after-effect from the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where Gauff failed to claim a medal despite playing in the women's singles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles.
Emma Raducanu will try to have another good run at the WTA 1000 level in Cincinnati. The 2021 US Open champion reached the quarterfinals of the 2025 Miami Open, pushing Pegula to three sets before ultimately losing.
The North American swing before and during the US Open has been Elena Rybakina's least successful time of the year. She has never been to a final during that period of the season, or been beyond the US Open third round. The Kazakhstani hopes to change that record.
Naomi Osaka, Mirra Andreeva, Petra Kvitova,
Qinwen Zheng,
Madison Keys, and
Jasmine Paolini are among the other players on the 2025 Cincinnati Open WTA entry list.
