The 2025 Citi Open in Washington will be a joint WTA and ATP event, as it has been since 2011. Several top women's players are on this year's entry list for the tournament, which is scheduled from July 21st to 27th.
Two-time French Open semifinalist Nadia Petrova won the maiden women's singles title in Washington 14 years ago. Sloane Stephens, Jessica Pegula, and Svetlana Kuznetsova are among the other former winners.
Coco Gauff won her first WTA 500 title at the 2023 Citi Open. She produced a superb performance to overcome Maria Sakkari in the final, after a run that also included victories against Liudmila Samsonova and Belinda Bencic.
Paula Badosa is the defending Citi Open champion. The Spaniard beat Marie Bouzkova in three sets to seal her first title since January 2022. It was an emotional moment for her after coming close to retiring because of repeated back injuries.
Badosa hopes to be back in Washington to defend her title. However, that cannot be guaranteed at the moment after she retired with an injury from her 2025 Berlin open quarterfinal against Xinyu Wang and emotionally smashed her racket before leaving the court.
That reaction from the former world No. 2 was entirely understandable. Since first injuring her back in mid-2023, she has shown superb resilience to bounce back from repeated injury setbacks.
Badosa reached the 2025 Australian Open semifinal and seemed to be in a good place. Sadly, her body keeps letting her down, and the 27-year-old has accepted that she will retire earlier than most players.
Two-time champion Pegula has also committed to the tournament. She usually thrives the most on North American hard courts, which she showed with superb results during that swing last year.
Pegula won the 2025 Canadian Open and finished as the runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka at the 2025 US Open and 2025 Cincinnati Open. The eight-time WTA titlist could not play in Washington last year because she was at the 2024 Olympics.
Elena Rybakina is another high-profile name on the entry list. The swing before and including the US Open has not been a successful time for her in the past. She has yet to win a title during that period or progress past the third round of the US Open.
The Kazakhstani's mediocre results at that time of the season are surprising since Rybakina's game can thrive in all conditions. Her past performances might be why she is starting the swing early in Washington.
Emma Raducanu is another Grand Slam champion who will compete in Washington. The British player will want to fight for a seeding spot at the US Open, and doing well at the Citi Open could help her toward that goal.
Amanda Anisimova was the runner-up to Pegula at last year's Canadian Open. Since then, the 23-year-old has won her first WTA 1000 title at the 2025 Qatar Open and can threaten any player when her powerful game is firing.
Sofia Kenin is the other Grand Slam champion on the entry list, with Rybakina being the other. The 2020 Australian Open winner played well in the first few months of this season after a challenging 2024, including reaching the 2025 Charleston Open final.
Emma Navarro, Diana Shnaider, Clara Tauson, Leylah Fernandez, and Marta Kostyuk are some of the other players on the 2025 Citi Open WTA entry list.
