Holger Rune was unwilling to let a social media post about him that he did not like go unanswered, so he delivered a cutting response to the account responsible.
The Danish ATP No. 1 is currently preparing for the 2025 Wimbledon Championships. He had a decent run to the quarterfinals of last week's 2025 Queen's Club Championships and will hope to use that as momentum for the season's third Grand Slam.
Although Rune is undoubtedly preparing well and training hard, that does not stop him from using social media. The 22-year-old has unexpectedly replied to posts from accounts that have used his username in the past.
Rune did that again when an X (formerly Twitter) account lambasted him for an aspect of his charity work. The player's website includes a section where he donates used equipment and puts broken rackets up for sale at high prices, which the fan account found deplorable.
"Went on Rune's website. This guy is so detestable man 😭 he has a page titled "Africa" and it's 3 photos of his USED stuff shipped to an unnamed place in Africa with pictures of black children standing around it. He's also selling smashed raquets for 6K on there."
That tweet was posted on the morning of June 23rd. The following night, over 36 hours later, Rune defended himself and made no apologies. The two-time French Open runner-up also asked the fan what he does for charity.
"That’s right. I send most of my old tennis clothes to various clubs abroad that needs equipment instead of throwing it out and a couple of years ago I also started supporting charity organisations for kids financially and raising awareness of helping where we can. I am sure we can all do more, but this is what I do right now. And what do you do?"
Many players probably feel they are damned if they do and damned if they do not. While many would frown upon partaking in no charitable work, trying to support those in need leads to questions and accusations of only doing it for publicity.
6,000 does seem like a lot of money for a broken racket. At the same time, many are willing to pay huge sums for rackets used by professionals, and the money, if the rackets are sold, could do a lot of good for people suffering worldwide.
Rune has engaged in other charitable activities during his career. Although the Dane has been a fiery and sometimes controversial figure since emerging, he seems to be maturing and working harder than ever to improve.
A few years ago, some thought a new "Big 3" between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner might occur. Rune's achievements since then should not be dismissed, but it is fair to say that his young rivals have surpassed him for now.
Rune has yet to produce a level as high as the extraordinary 2025 Roland Garros final between Alcaraz and Sinner. The Spaniard remarkably prevailed in a deciding set tiebreak after saving three championship points in the fourth set.
