The first ATP 500 tournament after the 2025 Wimbledon Championships will be played at the 2025 Citi Open in Washington. As usual, there is a superb entry list for the event.
ATP and WTA players compete together in Washington. It was solely a men's tournament from 1969 to 2010 until it was agreed that it would be a joint event from 2011 onwards. Coco Gauff has been among the women's winners.
Several legends of the men's game have won the Citi Open title, including Andre Agassi, Arthur Ashe, Juan Martin Del Potro, and Lleyton Hewitt. With five titles, Agassi has triumphed the most times in the American capital.
Jannik Sinner's third career title was at the 2021 Citi Open. He defeated home favorite Mackenzie McDonald 7-5, 4-6, 7-5 in a thrilling final that left the fans watching on the edge of their seats.
Unsurprisingly, Sinner's status as the world No. 1 means he is not on this year's entry list. However, many top and entertaining players have committed to the event, which should lead to much terrific tennis.
Nick Kyrgios hopes to return to the most successful tournament of his career. The Australian secured the 2019 and 2022 titles, overcoming Daniil Medvedev 7-6, 7-6 in the first final and Yoshihito Nishioka 6-4, 6-2 in the second.
Kyrgios' involvement cannot be guaranteed because of his injury record. He withdrew from the entire grass court season because of a setback in yet another attempt to get fit again after a physical problem.
The 2022 Wimbledon runner-up only played in one tournament in 2023 and 2024 because of severe wrist and knee injuries. Kyrgios underwent a wrist reconstruction to make a comeback, but still suffered from wrist pain in most matches this year.
Ben Shelton is another electric player on the Citi Open entry list. The hard courts in Washington are usually fast, which should suit the American's huge serve and aggressive style perfectly.
Shelton often produces his best tennis in front of supportive home fans. If the 2023 US Open and 2025 Australian Open semifinalist is playing well, he could be challenging to stop in conditions that favor him.
Taylor Fritz is another man who plays well in front of American crowds. Four of the 2024 US Open runner-up's nine titles have come on home soil, and he also possesses qualities that should benefit him on the courts in Washington.
Lorenzo Musetti often dazzles crowds with his variety. The Italian resisted the temptation to play at the 2025 Kitzbuhel Open or 2025 Swiss Open on clay, the surface he usually thrives most on, to start the hard court swing early instead at the Citi Open.
Daniil Medvedev will hope to go one step further than he managed in 2019. The six-time Grand Slam hard court finalist usually prefers playing on faster courts, and this could be one of the 29-year-old's best chances to win a first title since May 2023.
Frances Tiafoe, Andrey Rublev, Alex de Minaur, Tommy Paul, and Jakub Mensik are some of the other players on the 2025 Citi Open entry list.
