During the 2025 US Open fan week, the first iteration of a new mixed doubles format will be played, and many of the sport's most significant names are set to compete in it.
Earlier this season, the US Open caused a stir by announcing that it was scrapping the mixed doubles during the tournament and replacing it with a new format that would be introduced during the fan week held the day before.
The initial announcement stated there would be 16 teams; eight are given entry based on a combined singles ranking, and the remaining eight are wild cards picked by the tournament's organizers.
A different scoring system will also be used, probably to attract top singles players. Sets are played up to four games, there are no deuces, and a ten-point tiebreak will be used instead of a deciding third set.
Many slammed the move because some doubles players rely on the mixed doubles at Grand Slams to make a living from the sport, and this move could prevent them from sustaining a professional life in tennis.
Taylor Fritz was among the players who supported the move and has backed up those words by committing to the 2025 iteration. Fourteen pairs have been announced, and they all contain superb singles players.
Carlos Alcaraz will team up with Emma Raducanu. They are both former singles champions at Flushing Meadows and two of the most popular young players in the sport. Their partnership might attract the most attention of all the pairs.
ATP world No. 1 Jannik Sinner is set to compete alongside Emma Navarro. Neither of them expresses much emotion during matches, meaning their partnership should bring a particularly focused vibe for the fans to enjoy.
Novak Djokovic will partner with his compatriot Olga Danilovic. The Serbian WTA star has never hidden how much Djokovic inspired her, so the pairing promises to be a special moment for her.
WTA world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka's partner will be Grigor Dimitrov. The Belarusian is the defending champion in New York, and the team-up with Dimitrov will be two big personalities playing together.
Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud are another fascinating pairing. A few weeks ago, after Coco Gauff thrashed the Pole in the 2025 Madrid Open semifinal, Ruud sent her encouraging words and mentioned how much she inspires people worldwide.
2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina and Taylor Fritz will play together for the second time this year. In March, they won the Eisenhower Cup, a mixed doubles event held before the Indian Wells Open.
Naomi Osaka and Nick Kyrgios seem like a natural fit. The two share a good relationship off the court, and the Australian previously did a podcast with the four-time Grand Slam champion that covered many topics.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa's pairing is unsurprising since they are in a romantic relationship off the court. The Greek spoke openly earlier this year about the possibility of them playing together in the US Open mixed doubles.
The remaining pairs are Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe, Jack Draper and Qinwen Zheng, Jasmine Paolini and Lorenzo Musetti, Jessica Pegula and Tommy Paul, Mirra Andreeva and Daniil Medvedev, and Ben Shelton and Taylor Townsend.
Two more pairs will receive wild cards for the event scheduled for August 19th and 20th.
