The 2025 Wimbledon Championships has lost another significant name after Sebastian Korda withdrew from the prestigious grass-court tournament.
It is less than two weeks until main draw action begins at SW19. Recent Roland Garros champion Carlos Alcaraz and Barbora Krejcikova will try to defend the men's and women's titles they won at last year's Wimbledon.
Korda's last appearance was at Roland Garros. He lost in the third round to Frances Tiafoe after victories against Luciano Darderi and Sebastian Korda in his opening two matches.
The American did not seem to have any physical issues during the defeat to Tiafoe. At that point, there appeared to be no reason to worry about his chances of being fit for Wimbledon and the tournaments before it.
However, Korda withdrew from all pre-Wimbledon tournaments last week. The former Australian Open quarterfinalist quietly removed himself from the events he had signed up for, including the 2025 Queen's Club Championships, without giving an official reason.
Whatever issue Korda has must be at least somewhat severe after he also pulled out of Wimbledon. Once again, Korda did not provide a public explanation, which will increase speculation about his continued absence.
Last year's Citi Open champion missed all tournaments in 2024 after the US Open because of an elbow injury. He underwent successful surgery for the problem and returned at the start of this season.
Hopefully, a recurrence of that elbow issue is not what has caused Korda's absence. At this stage, it is impossible to plausibly predict what led to the 24-year-old missing the entire grass-court swing.
Wimbledon fans are familiar with the man who replaces Korda in the main draw. Christopher Eubanks, who had an unexpected run to the 2023 Wimbledon quarterfinals, takes Korda's Wimbledon main draw place.
Eubanks has struggled to kick on and be consistent since his excellent Wimbledon result almost two years ago. However, his huge serve and flat groundstrokes still make him one of the most dangerous non-seeded players to draw.
Nick Kyrgios was another high-profile player who withdrew from this year's Wimbledon. The 2022 runner-up at SW19 sustained a setback in his recovery from an injury, preventing him from playing any grass-court events.
Kyrgios returned at the start of 2025 after only playing one tournament in 2023 and 2024 because of serious wrist and knee injuries. He needed a wrist reconstruction to return to professional tennis.
Sadly for his many fans, Kyrgios has struggled to get through entire matches without wrist pain. Some feel he might be better off retiring and doing media work, but the Australian wants to keep playing for now.
The absence of Korda and Kyrgios will not prevent Wimbledon from being memorable. Novak Djokovic has another opportunity to equal Roger Federer's record of eight Wimbledon titles.
Alcaraz prevented the Serbian from doing that by beating him in the 2023 and 2024 finals at SW19. ATP world No. 1 Jannik Sinner will also be desperate to bounce back from his heartbreaking Roland Garros final defeat to Alcaraz by securing a maiden Wimbledon crown.
