Mirra Andreeva made the worst possible start to her grass-court season at the 2025 Berlin Open, and had one particularly fiery moment.
The 18-year-old was playing her first match since losing in the Roland Garros quarterfinal against Lois Boisson. Andreeva fell in front of a raucous crowd on Court Philippe-Chatrier and admitted she struggled to handle playing in front of the partisan French fans.
Magdalena Frech was Andreeva's opening-round opponent in Berlin. Although the Pole is a solid player, she usually plays her best tennis on hard courts and was a considerable underdog before the contest.
Andreeva looked to be coasting to victory after winning the first set 6-2. However, the match changed after the 2025 Indian Wells Open champion was broken in the second set's opening game.
That moment left Andreeva furious. The video below shows Frech breaking her teenage opponent with a superb cross-court backhand, which Andreeva could not get a racket on despite scrambling.
Andreeva is one of the most emotional players in the women's or men's games, and proved that again when she instinctively fired the ball into the stands after being broken before walking to her chair.
Last year's Roland Garros semifinalist was fortunate not to hit anyone watching. If she had, a default would have been very likely, although umpires are sometimes inconsistent in applying those rules.
Andreeva narrowly lost the second set 5-7 before her game utterly imploded in the third. Frech did not have to do anything special in the final set to confirm a 2-6, 7-5, 6-0 upset win in the German capital.
This incident again showed how Andreeva tries to find a balance between using her emotions to get fired up without it being detrimental to her chances of winning matches. She found that to win this year's 2025 Dubai Championships and the prestigious event in Indian Wells.
Another controversial moment involving Andreeva occurred in her 2025 Miami Open defeat to Amanda Anisimova. The American stopped playing mid-game because she could not grip her racket properly due to a blister.
However, Andreeva did not buy Anisimova's reasoning. She said it was apparent why Anisimova stopped, implying that this year's Qatar Open champion only did it to disrupt Andreeva's rhythm.
Anisimova is among the most affable players on the WTA Tour, but she issued a fiery social media response that showed the blister before flipping her middle finger around as if she was making a well-known gesture that is used as an insult.
The pair has not played since that match and incident, but there will undoubtedly be much attention paid to it when they do. It could be the start of a superb rivalry between two of the WTA's most exciting stars.
Andreeva has a chance to regroup at next week's 2025 Eastbourne Open, where she is on the entry list. Other top players like Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula, and Paula Badosa are also set to compete at the WTA 500 tournament. It promises to be a great tournament.
