David Goffin is a Belgian professional tennis player who was born on December 7, 1990, in Rocourt, Belgium. After being introduced to the sport by his dad at the age of six, he acquired a strong passion for tennis, setting up a promising future as a professional.
Goffin started his career, like the majority of professional players, on the ITF and Challenger tours, gaining valuable playing time before trying to make the leap to the ATP Tour. His first chance at a main-draw ATP match came at the Chennai Open in India in 2011. After seeing off local Somdev Devvarman, giving him his debut win on tour, he lost to Stan Wawrinka in the second round.
In 2012, he made a name for himself at the French Open, when he stormed on to the fourth round of the main draw. Coming up against idol Roger Federer, he put on a good show, winning the first set but ultimately falling in four.
Come 2014, he was ready to win his maiden ATP trophy. In fact, this was the year he got two of them – at the Moselle Open in Metz and at the Kitzbuhel Open. While steadily progressing up the rankings in the following years, he obtained his joint-best Grand Slam appearance for the first time at the 2016 French Open, where he reached the quarterfinal.
A solid 2017 season saw him win two more ATP trophies, this time in Tokyo and Shenzhen, as well as reach his career-high ranking of world number 7. Despite a slight lapse in form towards the end of the 2010s, the Belgian was not done yet.
Goffin made sure to win the Montpellier Open in 2021 before he went to Marrakech in 2022 and claimed the title there. As for now, he finds himself as one of the more experienced players on tour, with his expertise helping him to keep up the pace with the rest.
