Alexander Zverev ended his semi-final match at the 2022 Roland Garros in a very sad way as the German twisted his ankle before the second set tie-break.
Zverev and Rafael Nadal were competing in an incredible semi-final match that was shaping up to become a proper classic. With three hours already on the clock, the match was still only in the second set.
Nadal won the opening set in a tie-break after saving four set points, and the second set was about to be decided in a tie-break as well, but it ended before the tie-break could begin.
When the last point of the twelfth game was played, Zverev attempted to play a forehand passing shot, but as he chased the ball, he twisted his ankle in a very painful way.
The German played immediately fell to the ground and started screaming in pain, something his opponent quickly noticed and rushed to his opponent.
Zverev then left the court in a wheelchair, and it was very quickly obvious that he wouldn't be able to continue. The German returned to the court to announce his retirement.
After the match, Nadal praised Zverev and wished him a speedy recovery, as he was not happy with how the match ended, being very sad for his opponent.
It was clear that Nadal was sad about his opponent's injury, but while his semi-final opponent will now begin his recovery, the experienced Spaniard will focus on Sunday's final, in which he'll take on the winner of the match between Casper Ruud and Marin Cilic.
The Spanish player will attempt to win his 14th title in the French capital. This would further extend his incredible record at the Roland Garros and Grand Slams overall, as no one has ever gotten anywhere close to winning one major as many times as he won the French Open.
