Sofia Kenin has not competed on the WTA Tour since March, and her fans are going to have to wait even longer to see the American return to professional action.

The 2020 Australian Open champion was enduring a torrid start to the season before the injury occurred. She had lost six consecutive matches in a row, with the last of these being a straight sets defeat to Beatriz Haddad Maia in Indian Wells.

Kenin's only two triumphs this season were in her opening tournament of the year in Adelaide. She claimed victories against Lucia Bronzetti and Ajla Tomljanovic, before falling in the quarterfinal to Ashleigh Barty.

The 23-year-old has been out with an ankle injury since her loss to Haddad Maia in Indian Wells. Kenin had been set to play in Miami after the event in Indian Wells, but withdrew from her opening round match.

Unfortunately, Kenin has still not fully recovered from her injury issue. Ankle injuries can often be slow to heal, and that has been the case for Kenin, with her progress happening at a frustratingly slow pace.

The former Grand Slam champion's ongoing recovery means she is unable to play at the Nottingham Open. Kenin was on the entry list for the tournament, but she will now be replaced.

Although Kenin will undoubtedly want to return to the court as quickly as possible, it is wise of her not to rush her recovery. Doing this could risk aggravating her injury further, which could jeopardize her chances of being available for the North American hard court swing.

Despite this disappointing news, there are still many excellent players set to feature at the Nottingham Open. For instance, Emma Raducanu has been awarded a wild card for the event. That means there will still be much excellent tennis for the fans in Nottingham to enjoy.
