Marin Cilic has been dealing with many injury problems recently, and he won't play at the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters either.
The Croatian used to be a really good tennis player, but that's not been the case recently, even though it has very little to do with his tennis. As he got older, Cilic started to experience more and more injury problems, which got particularly bad in the last two years.
The Croatian managed to play only two matches in 2023, which is less than ideal, especially at an age in which he doesn't have too many years left. Ideally, Cilic would be playing right now and enjoying it, but unfortunately, he can't.
There was hope that he might play at last year's US Open, but he was forced to abandon these plans and push his comeback to this year. He finally returned this year, playing at the Hong Kong Open to start, but he lost that match to Jan-Lennard Struff. He then played one match at the Kooyong exhibition and actually won it.
It was a nice match against Andy Murray, so fans got excited about what he could do moving forward. The Australian Open campaign ended with an early exit against Fabian Marozsan, and it would be the last match he would play in January.
Some more injury concerns made him pause a bit, as he only returned in the Davis Cup for Croatia. He played one match, but it wasn't a very good match, so he lost.
Next up was Buenos Aires, which was an interesting choice for CIlic. He opted for some clay tennis, but it wasn't a long stay as he also lost early at the ATP 250 tournament.
That would be the last match he'd play this year as he missed the Sunshine Double and will now miss Monte-Carlo Masters as well. Injuries are the culprit again, and it looks really bleak for Cilic after another withdrawal.
