Former US Open champion Marin Cilic won't be playing at the 2023 US Open due to an injury setback which will keep him away from the courts for a little longer.
Marin Cilic has only played two matches so far this year as he started his year traditionally in India, playing at the ATP event in Pune. He won his opening round match against Roberto Carballes Baena but pulled out of the event before his 2nd round match against Tallon Griekspoor.
The reason for the withdrawal was a knee injury, one that kept him away from the courts for a very long time. Dealing with knee injuries is always tough, especially at his age, where everything heals slower, and is more prone to re-injury.
Unfortunately, that is exactly what happened to Cilic, who was very excited about coming back to the sport. Posting an update on the social media platform Instagram, Cilic explained that a setback would keep him away for a little longer with no return date revealed.
"Unfortunately, not great news these days. Had a setback with my knee which will postpone my return on the tour and I will have to miss the US swing of tournaments. ⠀While I am extremely disappointed to be missing another part of the season, I believe better days are ahead & will keep working hard to get there. Thank you to everyone for their continued support."
His return happened recently at the Croatia Open in Umag where he was beaten by Flavio Cobolli in two sets. He didn't look that good or comfortable on the tennis court which probably indicated that not he was not healthy enough to play.
Heartbreaking for Cilic, but he's keeping high spirits in hopes of returning to the sport. Time will tell when that ultimately happens.
