Taylor Fritz is one of the best tennis players in the world, but the ATP world No. 4 proved that math is not among his strengths in a viral video.
Fritz attended the after-party for the ESPYs, an annual awards ceremony produced by ESPN. Coco Gauff won the 2025 tennis player of the year award, and Sloane Stephens received the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award.
The 2025 ESPYs occurred on July 16th. Before preparing for the 2025 Citi Open, Fritz blew off some steam by attending the after-party and enjoying some drinks before leaving a few hours later.
Although there is nothing wrong with having some alcohol in a fun social setting, doing an interview afterward is unwise. Fritz found that out after being stumped by a math question while in that state.
That moment can be viewed below. The interviewer asked Fritz whether he could calculate 50 $20 bills. When sober, the 2024 US Open runner-up would probably have been able to work out the correct answer of 1,000.
The question proved too challenging for the intoxicated Fritz. He began trying to figure out the multiplication before admitting that drinking at the ESPYs after-party was impacting his ability to think.
"50 20-dollar bills.....(laughs). Well, every five is a hundred, so..... Every five is a hundred.... So, that's..... I've been drinking too much tonight."
After the interviewer insisted he could do it, Fritz returned to trying to work it out. Unfortunately, the American gave the wrong answer, failed to explain his rationale, and ultimately elected to give up.
"There's 10, 5..... I mean..... It's $10,000. In the math, I said every 5 20-dollar bill is a hundred, you said 50 of them? So there's 10 of them, 10 of 100 is a thousand, and I'm an idiot. I was at the ESPYs, I was drinking."
Journalist Ben Rothenberg asked Fritz about that moment in one of his press conferences at the Citi Open. He admitted he should not have done the interview while drinking, and accused the interviewer of setting him up.
"I shouldn't have said yes to doing that. I knew it was one of those. I had just left the ESPYs after party... I'm actually pretty happy with how it turned out, because when I did the interview, in my head, I thought that I was, like, going to sound super drunk (smiling). But I actually sounded very coherent, like normal. I don't think you'd ever tell from watching the video. I was happy about that."
"I know those street interviews are such a setup, too. He said he was going to interview me, ask me some questions, and he hit me with a math question. It's really bad. It's really, really bad."
Many fans found Fritz's exchange hilarious and endearing. By being funny while drunk, Fritz came across as a very normal and relatable person. The 27-year-old's next tournament will be the 2025 Canadian Open after he lost in the Citi Open quarterfinal to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
