Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios played an incredibly entertaining doubles tennis match to win their first match together at the 2025 Brisbane International.
Both of these players are primarily singles players, even though Kyrgios' only career Grand Slam title comes from doubles. Both have appeared on the doubles court before, as singles players often use it to get some matches under their belt.
One of the use cases is the start of a new season when tennis players have limited time to prepare for the Australian Open. In 2025, it starts already on January 12th.
Therefore, Djokovic and Kyrgios have decided to team up in doubles at the 2025 Brisbane International. It's something they have planned years before, but since the Australian couldn't compete due to an injury, it couldn't happen.
Kyrgios is now back, and this was only his second official ATP match since 2022, with the only other appearance coming at the 2023 Stuttgart Open.
He stated multiple times that there was only around 15% chance that he would continue playing after his wrist surgery, but he's back, and he certainly didn't look like someone who was close to never touching a tennis racket again.
Already in the first game of the match, which the duo played against an experienced doubles duo of Alexander Erler and Andreas Mies, Kyrgios single-handedly won all the points for his team to win the opening game of the match.
It didn't take long before the Australian-Serbian duo worked their way to a couple of break points. Leading 2-1, they had two chances to break their opponents, but that didn't happen, as Erler and Mies saved both.
Djokovic and Kyrgios are both incredible servers, and they didn't face almost any issues on their serve in the first set. When leading 5-4, they produced some sensational shots to overcome a 0-30 deficit, winning four points in a row to break their opponents' serve and win the first set 6-4.
First, at 0-30 down, Djokovic played an incredible around-the-net backhand winner, to reduce the deficit to 15-30, still giving his team a chance to do something in the game.

On the set point, Kyrgios played probably an even more incredible "banana shot" around the duo at the net. His forehand just barely caught the line, so much so that the opposing team requested a review of the line call.

In the second set, Djokovic and Kyrgios continued serving exceptionally, and on the return, they were once again able to work their way to a few break points. This time, however, they were not so efficient, even though Kyrgios produced some moments of magic with a front-facing tweener lob.
First, they didn't use one break point in the second game, and then two more in the fourth game. Because of that, the second set had to be decided in a tie-break, which the Austrian-German duo won 7-4 to force the deciding match tie-break.
Despite not playing the best of tie-breaks only a few minutes before, Kyrgios and Djokovic were the better duo in the match tie-break to win the match 6-4, 6-7(4), 10-8.
In the second round of the tournament, they will face a proper test, as they will take on the first-seeded team of Nikola Mektic and Michael Venus, who had a first-round bye as a seeded team.
