Caroline Wozniacki is out of the 2024 Charleston Open already in the second round, which is her earliest exit ever from the tournament.
The Danish player has performed well on the green clay in Charleston over the years. In her first-ever participation in 2009, she reached the final, and she followed up on that with a semi-final appearance in 2010.
Wozniacki made it back-to-back-to-back semi-finals in 2011, but she finally took it a couple of steps further, winning the title at the Charleston Open. After that, she reached the quarter-finals in 2013 and 2017, and another final in 2019.
The Dane never exited the tournament prior to the final eight, but that changed in 2024 when she met Anhelina Kalinina from Ukraine in the second round of the WTA 500 tournament.
As the 15th-seeded player at the tournament, the Ukrainian had a first-round bye, while wild card Wozniacki outplayed home qualifier McCartney Kessler in a very dominant fashion.
Wozniacki was so dominant that she lost only one game in her match against the American, but she couldn't follow up on that win against Kalinina, who was just too strong for the former world no. 1, who struggled from the beginning of the match.
The Danish player faced break points in every single one of her service games in the opening set, and while the Ukrainian used only two chances, her nearly perfect sering performance, with only four points lost on her serve, was more than enough to win the first set 6-2.
In the second set, Kalinina continued to apply the pressure, and once again, it was mostly on her opponent's serve that she managed to create chances. Once again, the 15th seed broke her opponent's serve twice, looking to finish the match at 6-2, 5-2.
However, Wozniacki managed to get one break back, but that wouldn't matter much as Kalinina still won the match 6-2, 6-3, reaching the third round of the 2024 Charleston Open, where she'll await the winner of the match between the fourth-seeded Daria Kasatkina and Ashlyn Krueger.
