Halep And Wozniacki Paradoxically Receive Wild Cards For Madrid Open After Disagreements

by Zachary Wimer

Simona Halep got another wild card entry, which will probably disappoint Caroline Wozniacki, but she received one for the same tournament - the Madrid Open.

Halep’s to tennis was quite exciting because not only did she play an interesting match against Paula Badosa, but there was also a bit of drama off the courts. Wozniacki was asked about the Romanian getting a wild card entry into the Miami Open, and she came out against it.

She qualified her statement by saying that she likes Halep and that this isn't specific to her but generally thinks that players who were caught with banned substances shouldn't receive a wild card upon their return. That didn't impress Halep, who fired back by explaining that she didn't dope on purpose, which is technically true.

She didn't do it on purpose, but she was caught with a banned substance, and her suspension was reduced to nine months by CAS. Their previous disagreement seemed to inspire the Madrid Open organizers, as they handed both players a wild card.

Halep once again received a wild card entry into the event, which shouldn't be a huge surprise, but Wozniacki got one as well. Halep is obviously a player who left a huge mark on tennis, and giving her a wild card makes perfect sense. The same can be said for Wozniacki as the Danish player wouldn't really want to play qualifiers, and she's certainly going to draw some eyeballs to the WTA 1000 event.

Halep thanked the event for the opportunity on social media, as she’s trying to build up form and confidence on the tennis court to recover her ranking.

“Muchas Gracias @MutuaMadridOpen for this wild card opportunity. Madrid has always been a special tournament for me, with happy memories and I'm grateful to be able to make more. See you soon.”
