Mirra Andreeva keeps winning at the start of the 2025 season, as she added another win to reach the quarter-finals of the Brisbane International.
The teenage prodigy started the 2025 season as the WTA World No. 16, but with her potential, Andreeva won't be far from the Top 10 breakthrough this year, which is also her goal.
In fact, she's already set to move up by one position to her new career-high 15th place thanks to her third-round win in Brisbane, as she will overtake Jelena Ostapenko.
Andreeva's third-round opponent in Brisbane was Linda Noskova, a player she knows very well. Last year, the two met in the quarter-finals of the tournament in Brisbane, with Noskova winning the match 7-5, 6-3.
This year, they met earlier in the draw, and the young Russian player was ready to get her revenge. In the first set of the match, the 17-year-old player was almost flawless, mostly on her serve.
Andreeva didn't face a single break point, and after her first two service games, she only lost one point on her serve. At the same time, she was able to create a chance to break, which she used.
That was enough for the teenage star to win the first set 6-3. It looked like an almost perfect performance, but Andreeva was able to further improve it in the second set of the match.
She started by breaking her opponent's serve and holding her own to lead 2-0. Then, she repeated the process despite facing three break points on her serve. After four games played, the 17-year-old led already 4-0.
Andreeva then broke Noskova's serve once again, and despite facing another break point on her serve, she won the second set of the match 6-0, winning the match 6-3, 6-0, and getting revenge for her last year's loss.
Naturally, revenge was one of the first things that Andreeva mentioned during her on-court interview, remembering her match against Noskova in 2024.
"I’m really happy to be back in the quarter-finals here. Last year, she almost killed me in the quarter-final. I thought it was time to take my revenge."
Andreeva also spoke about her goal of reaching the Top 10 for the 2025 season. If she wins the tournament in Brisbane, she will be ranked already 12th, further closing up on this realistic goal.
"My number one goal for 2025 is to crack the Top 10. So I’m just gonna do my best for this starting in Brisbane, from the first tournament of the season. I’m just gonna do my best and see if we can achieve this goal."
Up next, Andreeva will play against Ons Jabeur, who is an experienced player. To beat her, she might need to use the experience of her coach, Conchita Martinez, who she thanked after the win for helping her to improve.
"Thanks to Conchita. She helped me improve so thanks her. I know sometimes it’s not easy to work with me. I think she’s doing a good job so far. Sometimes could be better… but she’s ok."
