Serena Williams singed up to play the WTA 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati and it seems that she might surprise everyone at the 2022 US Open.
Without a doubt, Serena Williams is the most experienced player on the WTA Tour. Majority of the Top 10 members are not even 27 years old and they have won 5 Grand Slam titles combined. On the other hand, the American experienced probably every situation a player can face on a tennis court and she will use all of that experience at the 2022 US Open.
During an exclusive interview with Tennis-Infinity.com, Williams’ former coach, Rick Macci said:
“If she wants to do it, she has to fully commit and get in amazing shape. You don't lose the talent, you just lose the fitness. Then you get the confidence back once you start playing matches. She just has to dive in get used to winning and losing. She's probably the best competitor maybe in any women's sport we've ever seen. Serena is like a pitbull when she gets a hold of you she doesn't let go. She's a brutal competitor.”
And that’s exactly what Serena needs to do if she wants to win the 2022 US Open. She has the experience, she has the power and accuracy of the strokes. Only thing she currently misses is the match practice.
And that’s exactly what the American plans to do in Toronto. Prior to the 2022 Wimbledon, she played only a doubles event with Ons Jabeur and her first round match in the All England Club was her first singles match in a year. That will be different at the 2022 US Open.
WTA 1000 event in Toronto is a great chance for Serena to prepare for the fourth Grand Slam tournament of the year. If she loses in the first round again, she will have another chance in Cincinnati as it will be crucial for her to get some wins behind her belt before playing in the Flushing Meadows.
All in all, Serena has it all. She’s ready to win another Grand Slam title and the American crowd will want her to do it on the home soil. And that’s another reason why she might be able to surprise everyone at the 2022 US Open. She was heavily supported already in London, but the crowd will be even louder in New York.
The fans will get behind Williams since the first minute of the tournament. And against the less experienced players which are currently ranked in the Top 10 of the WTA Rankings, that might be the deciding factor as they might not be used to face not just a very experienced player that has 23 Grand Slam titles, but also the packed stadium in New York.
