Caroline Wozniacki is in London for the Wimbledon Invitational, though, in a few weeks, she'll be playing with the active players.
Wozniacki surprised many by announcing an imminent return to tennis, taking a few wild cards ahead of the US Open. She will play at the Grand Slam as well, sending her fans into a frenzy as they literally couldn't believe the news.
Wozniacki retired in 2020, only two years after her maiden Grand Slam trophy at the Australian Open. It was an abrupt retirement from a player that dealt with many injury problems as her career progressed. Now aged 33, she's ready to tackle the WTA Tour as a mother, and we've seen what that can do to a player.
Tatjana Maria last year proved that mothers rock, and Elina Svitolina is proving it right now as well. Wozniacki thinks she has what it takes to do some damage on Tour as she played at a very competitive time in women's tennis, and she's right. She was a spectacular player at her peak, a level that would likely contend for the number one rank in the world.
I have played them before, I know exactly what I am up against. I know they are playing extremely well and aggressive and consistent and it is going to be a tough challenge but I am up for the challenge. I have fought tough players before and fought my way around so I am going to do the same this time.
Obviously there are a lot of good players out there and it is a high level of tennis but I played with the greatest of all time in Serena. She’s the best player I ever played and she isn’t around anymore so that feels good to me at the moment! I am happy not to have to play her anymore.
In the same interview, Wozniacki further admitted that she doesn't know how long she will play as it will depend on how her body will react and some other things. The plan is to get back out there and enjoy the time on the courts. She'll play plenty of events on her comeback, so fans will enjoy a lot of time seeing her on the court.
I am not putting a time on how long I will play, just see how the body holds up, see how I feel, how the kids and everyone does. I am excited to be back and excited to be playing and hopefully it will be my best tennis yet.
