Thiago Seyboth Wild is among the most emotional players on the
ATP circuit, and he showed that after losing at a Challenger Tour event.
Despite his undoubted talent, Seyboth Wild struggles for consistency. That is why he played at the Challenger 125 tournament in Oeiras this week instead of at the 2025 Munich Open or the 2025 Barcelona Open.
The Brazilian faced Shintaro Mochizuki in the opening round. After a tight battle that could have gone either way, Mochizuki prevailed 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 to seal a place in the round of 16 in Portugal.
That was Seyboth Wild's sixth consecutive loss. His last victory was in a deciding set tiebreak against Alexandre Muller in the opening round of the 2025 Indian Wells Open before a defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas, starting his losing run.
Yet another setback proved too much for Seyboth Wild to bear. He shook hands amicably with Mochizuki at the net afterward, but left the Japanese player surprised by unleashing his rage a couple of seconds later.
Seyboth Wild whacked his racket into the net, causing Mochizuki to stop in shock. He also probably wanted to avoid any possibility of being hit by the racket or ball due to how out of control Seyboth Wild was.
The Brazilian did not finish there, unleashing one more slam against the net before eventually walking toward his chair. Mochizuki seemed to be showing some concern for the net before the camera cuts away in the video below.
Seyboth Wild will probably face some punishment for his actions. Hitting the net with such force could damage it, and other players have been sanctioned for damaging equipment during matches.
Striking the net was
one of the infractions for which Daniil Medvedev was fined at the 2025 Australian Open. The 2021 US Open champion received a hefty fine due to various actions across his two matches at the season's opening Grand Slam.
Ironically, Seyboth Wild's most famous career moment was a five-set triumph against Medvedev in the opening round of the 2023 French Open at Roland Garros. He showed his considerable natural talent in that contest.
The incident involving Seyboth Wild was not the first controversial event at a Challenger Tour event in recent weeks.
Pablo Carreno Busta caused a considerable stir at a tournament in Girona.
During a deciding set tiebreak against Iliyan Radulov. It seemed like Carreno Busta had secured his first point of the tiebreak when a line judge called a shot from Radulov out, but the umpire decided to inspect the mark.
Despite the shot looking like it landed a long way out in real time, the umpire overruled the line judge and called it in. Carreno Busta became hysterical and repeatedly screamed at the umpire to call the supervisor to the court.
Although the Spaniard's frustrations were understandable, there was no excuse for him shoving the umpire while asking for the supervisor. The official remained remarkably composed in that moment, and Carreno Busta was lucky to face no further punishment after the match.
