Ben Shelton is in a happy relationship, but that doesn't mean fans will see him doing double dates with fellow tennis player
Coco Gauff.
As the young stars of the US tennis, both Gauff and Shelton are in the spotlight. Their lives are not in the spotlight only on the tennis courts, but also away from them, including their relationships.
For some time, both Gauff and Shelton were single, but they are now both in a relationship. Another thing that the two shared was the cloud of mystery surrounding their relationships.
To this day, the identity of Gauff's boyfriend is not known, even though there are some speculations about who it might be. When it comes to Shelton, he "hard-launched" his relationship with soccer player Trinity Rodman, sharing a picture with her on Instagram.
Now, in an interview with
US Magazine, Shelton, who
currently competes at the Munich Open, spoke about his relationship with Rodman. Shelton was asked whether he would consider a double date with Gauff and her boyfriend, but he said that double dates are not his thing.
"Not the biggest double date guy, to be honest. More of a normal date guy. But I guess we’ll see. Definitely have a lot of friends who are in long-term relationships, but for it to match up where we’re all in the same place at the same time is unlikely."
Shelton also spoke about how the news about his relationship with Rodman was received. He didn't expect that it would receive the reaction that it got.
"I was sure some people would talk about it, but I didn’t think it would be a break the Internet type of thing. But I’ve always been like, 'OK, if I have a serious girlfriend then posting about it on Instagram isn’t that crazy.'"
The 22-year-old American also explained why it was important to him to make the relationship public. He was annoyed by always seeing rumors about his dating life whenever he appeared next to a woman.
"I feel like for the past 6 months, whenever I would get seen with somebody, people would think we were dating. It’s like, no, we’re just friends. Or if I’d hang out in a group of three and it was a guy and a girl, they’d cut the guy out and make it seem like I was on a date. It’s either gonna be I post about my girlfriend or they post about assuming who my girlfriend is."
Since Shelton and Rodman are both professional athletes, their relationship might be a bit challenging at times, but those are the sacrifices that the third-highest-ranked American on the
ATP Tour is willing to make.
"You gotta make sacrifices sometimes. It’s just the life that we live. The lives that we live right now and for the foreseeable future. I think that you have to have two selfless people in a situation like this, and I think we have that."
