The 2023 Hobart International is played from January 9 - 14 and presents the last opportunity for players on the WTA Tour to prepare for the first major of the season.
The Australian Open starts on the 16th of January, and all players want to be ready for it. While some prefer to practice a lot, others want to play competitive matches and also earn some points, and those are players that are in the draw of the 2023 Hobart International.
The event was last held in 2020 when Elena Rybakina became the champion. She's not in the draw in 2023, but many former champions traveled to Hobart. Sofia Kenin, who won in 2019, will start against Lin Zhu in the first round.
Elise Mertens won the event twice, in 2017 and 2018, and she's the second-seeded player in 2023. The Belgian will start against a qualifier and she can meet the American, who triumphed in 2019 in the second round.
The third-seeded Alize Cornet is another former champion in the draw. The Frenchwoman won the event in 2016, and she will begin her second title chase against Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the first round.
The fourth-seeded Sloane Stephens is one of the two Grand Slam champions in the draw, alongside compatriot Kenin, and she will have to wait to find out who her first-round opponent is, as it will be one of the qualifiers.
Marie Bouzkova is the highest-seeded player at the event, and she will kick off the tournament against Jaqueline Cristian.
