The 2024 Strasbourg Open is one of two WTA tournaments running concurrently in the final week before main draw action begins at Roland Garros.
This year's Strasbourg Open has been elevated in status and will be a WTA 500 tournament. It will run from May 19th to 25th and is played on outdoor clay. Some of the most decorated WTA players in history have won this event in the past.
The roll of honor includes names such as Steffi Graf, Lindsay Davenport, Maria Sharapova, and Angelique Kerber. Last season, Elina Svitolina etched her name in that elite band as a two-time champion.
The Ukrainian's comeback from maternity leave was only a few weeks old when she won her first title as a mother. Svitolina will return to defend her crown and push to become Ukraine's No. 1 player at the Olympics. For now, that title belongs to Marta Kostyuk.
The top seed will be Jessica Pegula, who has signed up to play in Strasbourg for the third time in her career. The American World No. 5 has not played much tennis this year, and more so on clay, having pulled out from Madrid because of injury and remaining a doubt for Rome.
With the tournament being upgraded to a 500 level, five more players ranked in the Top 20 will join the six-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist Pegula and defending champion Svitolina in Strasbourg.
These include Dubai champion Jasmine Paolini, Beatriz Haddad Maia, the in-form Danielle Collins, Madison Keys, and the big-hitting Russian duo of Ekaterina Alexandrova and Liudmila Samsonova. 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu is a surprise inclusion at the tournament.
Emma Navarro, one of the breakout stars of 2024, will also play. Rouen champion Sloane Stephens will seek back-to-back titles in France. Barbora Krejcikova, a former champion here, will look to emulate her 2021 exploits when she won a rare Strasbourg-Roland Garros double.
The French contingent will be well represented, with Diane Parry, Clara Burel, and Alize Cornet among those confirmed for the main draw. The initial entry list for the 2024 Strasbourg Open can be seen below.
