Iga Swiatek will try to continue her 2024 Madrid Open run against Sorana Cirstea, who will be her second opponent at the WTA 1000 event.
Swiatek returned to winning ways at the Madrid Open, winning her second-round matchup with ease. The Polish player didn't go all the way in Stuttgart last week, so she's hungry for some success this week.
An added motivation might be the fact that she made the final last year but was beaten by Aryna Sabalenka. Going all the way would be a major achievement for her, but it won't be easy.
Next up is Cirstea, who was never a player that can be overlooked. Even with her inconsistencies, the Romanian is a player who can beat anyone, including the world no. 1.
Head-to-head:
They have played three times so far, and Swiatek leads the H2H 3-0. It looks pretty dominant, and for the most part, it was dominant. Cirstea won a set in only one of those matches, and the one they played earlier this year in Doha was a 6-1, 6-1 win for the Polish player.
It's not a great matchup for Cirstea, and there is a reason for that. For all of her problems, the Pole is generally a pretty consistent baseliner. She will miss often, but she'll also hit some spectacular shots often.
Cirstea can be consistent, but mostly not, especially when she's under a lot of pressure, which is guaranteed against Swiatek.
Iga Swiatek | Sorana Cirstea | |
3 | H2H | 0 |
1 | Rank | 30 |
22 | Age | 34 |
27-4 | 2024 W/L | 10-9 |
308-70 | Career W/L | 540-410 |
Prediction:
Knowing all of that, it's pretty hard to back anything but an easy win for Swiatek in this match. She's the better player on clay, she's in better form right now, she's very motivated and bested Cirstea in the last match they played.
Prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in two sets.
