Winston-Salem returns in 2022 with another ATP 250 event in the week prior to the US Open with Grigor Dimitrov as the top seed.
The Bulgarian accepted a wild card entrance into this competition because he hasn't had much luck lately. Despite spending a lot of time practising in the States and normally performing really well in North America he hasn't looked very sharp in the recent Masters. His draw is a difficult one with Thiem possibly waiting for him in round two.
If he triumphs in that contest, he might face British player Jack Draper, who is currently experiencing a breakout season. Ilya Ivashka, the champion from last year, is back and might face Jiri Lehehcka or Peter Gojowzcyk in the second round. Ivashka's opponent in last year's final, Mikael Ymer, will face Federico Coria in the opening round.
Botic van de Zandschulp, the second seed, will play a qualifier or Popyrin in round two. Jaume Munar might be his opponent in round three if he prevails in his round two contest. Proteceted ranking entree Kyle Edmund will take on Tomas Etcheverry in the opening round. Other interesting matchups include Monteiro - Kudla, Kokkinakis - Duckworth and more.
