Ilya Ivashka was born on February 24, 1994, in Minsk, Belarus, to Uladzimir and Aleksei Ivashka. He began playing tennis at the age of 5 after watching his father play. His idol growing up was Roger Federer.
It took Ivashka some time to make a breakthrough on the ATP Tour. Until the end of 2017, he played almost exclusively on the ITF Futures Circuit and then the ATP Challenger Tour. His first Challenger Tour title came in Uzbekistan in June 2017.
Ivashka rose up the rankings and managed to claim nine ATP Tour victories in 2018. His best result was reaching the third round of the Canadian Open as a qualifier. He also won another Challenger Tour title in China. Ivaskha’s efforts in 2018 saw him end the season inside the Top 100.
2019 and 2020 only brought very limited success for Ivashka. He did get his first victory in a Grand Slam main draw at the 2019 Australian Open against Malek Jaziri, but there was not much else to celebrate aside from that.
However, Ivashka then had an excellent 2021 season. His best moment from that year was claiming a maiden ATP title at the Winston-Salem Open. The Belarusian’s very impressive run saw him only drop one set in six matches against Andreas Seppi, Marin Cilic, Jan-Lennard Struff, Pablo Carreno Busta, Emil Ruusuvuori, and Mikael Ymer.
Ivashka also broke new ground at Grand Slam level in 2021. He progressed to the fourth round at Wimbledon, exiting to the eventual runner-up Matteo Berrettini. That was followed by a third-round appearance at the US Open, where he fell once again to Berrettini. Ivaskha ended the season with a 31/16 win-loss record.
The most notable part of 2022 for Ivashka was a run to the fourth round of the US Open, beating Hubert Hurkacz and Lorenzo Musetti along the way. He narrowly missed out on the quarterfinal after losing an epic battle in five sets to Jannik Sinner.
2023 was a very difficult season for Ivashka. Aside from a third-round appearance at the Indian Wells Open, he struggled and dropped to No. 181 in the rankings at the end of the year.
