Mikael Ymer is a former professional Swedish tennis player who was born on September 9, 1998, in Skara, Sweden. Born into a sport-loving family, all three of the parents’ children have got into tennis and play to a high standard.

Following a dazzling junior career, which took him to the heights of reaching the Boys' final at Wimbledon, he made his main draw ATP debut in 2015 at his home tournament, the ATP 250 tournament in Stockholm. In search of as many opportunities to play amongst the elite and to improve his all-round game, the Swede made in-roads on the doubles tour in his opening years.

His talent was apparent when he won his maiden ATP title at the doubles event of the Stockholm Open in 2016. After just a few years of hard grind on the main ATP Tour, the youngster made his fully-fledged Grand Slam debut at the 2019 French Open, where he also recorded his first victory at that level, winning the first-round match-up.

The early 2020s were a somewhat purple patch for the Swede, with him recording some of his best results at the biggest tournaments – 2021 saw him reach career-best performances at the Australian Open and French Open. Later that same year, the young gun recorded his best effort at an ATP event, with him seeing off tough opposition in the form of Frances Tiafoe and Carlos Alcaraz to reach his first final.

Despite struggling to soar up the rankings, Ymer managed to record steady progress in the following years, reaching his career summit in terms of ranking in 2023, when he achieved the 50th spot. That same year was when things started to go downhill for the young professional.

After initially receiving the news that he was to be suspended for 18 months after failing to attend three drug tests in a 12-month period, appealing the penalty only for it to be upheld, Ymer announced his retirement from the sport in August 2023.

It remains to be seen whether the Swede will make a return in some shape or form to the sport, as he certainly still has many potential years left in the tank, but for now, he remains an ex-professional tennis player after enjoying a brief but successful career.
