The 2025
US Open women's singles, scheduled from August 24th to September 7th, could be among the most thrilling in the tournament's history, and the
entry list has been released.
Predicting the women's champion at the US Open has been very challenging in recent years. In 2021,
Emma Raducanu stunned the tennis world by winning the title at Flushing Meadows as an 18-year-old qualifier.
Iga Swiatek secured the title in 2022. Although the Pole was the most dominant player in 2022, she had never won a hard-court Grand Slam until that event, when she defeated Ons Jabeur in the final.
Coco Gauff defeated
Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to claim her maiden Grand Slam title in 2023. Sabalenka banished the bad memories from that loss by beating
Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 to win last year's iteration of the tournament.
Although every Grand Slam is important, the 2025 US Open feels particularly crucial for Sabalenka. Despite being the
WTA world No. 1 and reaching seven finals, she has yet to obtain a major title this season.
Sabalenka lost the 2025 Australian Open final to
Madison Keys and
the 2025 French Open final to Coco Gauff, both in three sets. At the 2025 Wimbledon Championships,
Amanda Anisimova beat her in another three-set battle.
Despite those tough moments, Sabalenka has been the best women's hard-court player in the last few years, reaching the last five Grand Slam finals on the surface. Many will consider her the favorite in New York.
Swiatek hopes to build on the momentum from her stunning Wimbledon title run. In previous years,
the 24-year-old was known for struggling on grass more than on other surfaces and did not hide how uncomfortable she felt on it.
Before the grass-court swing, Swiatek had not reached a final in over a year and did not win a clay-court title this season, which was usually her most successful time. Triumphing at Wimbledon must give her more belief that winning a second US Open is possible.
Coco Gauff's level dropped on grass after securing her second Grand Slam crown at the French Open. The 21-year-old did not win a match at the 2025 Berlin Open or Wimbledon, losing to Dayana Yastremska at SW19.
Despite reaching the Wimbledon fourth round as a 15-year-old in 2019, grass has been Gauff's weakest surface since. Fans can expect her to perform much better on hard courts after having time to refresh mentally.
Mirra Andreeva will hope to find her hard-court form from earlier this year, when
she won the 2025 Dubai Championships and the 2025 Indian Wells Open. If the 18-year-old produces that level at Flushing Meadows, she is a genuine title contender.
Although
Naomi Osaka has struggled for consistently good form since returning from maternity leave at the start of 2024, the 2018 and 2020 US Open champion is capable of a deep run on the hard courts in New York.
Two-time Wimbledon champion
Petra Kvitova will retire at this year's US Open. It is the only Grand Slam where she has never made the semifinal, getting to the 2015 and 2017 quarterfinals. The Czech deserves a great send-off after a superb career.
2021 winner Raducanu, 2024 runner-up Pegula, Madison Keys, Amanda Anisimova,
Paula Badosa,
Elena Rybakina, and
Jasmine Paolini are among the other players on the women's entry list for the 2025 US Open.
