In an unusual yet hilarious episode during the 2023 Bastad Open final, Casper Ruud claimed recognition of an unexpected 'spectator'–his dog.

The 2023 Bastad Open final saw a blockbuster clash between Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev, which was won by the Russian player. Both players brought their A-game to the court, especially in the first set, and there was a lot to enjoy for the fans.

However, the game was not all tension and fierce competition, as it was peppered with a moment of unexpected hilarity that lightened the atmosphere. The bizarre incident unfolded during the first set, with the score locked at 2-2.

Ruud was about to serve when an abrupt and loud bark echoed through the venue. An interruption on a tennis court is nothing new. A ball misfired into the crowd, a technical malfunction, even a defiant seagull swooping too low – these things happen. But a dog bark? That’s somewhat out of the ordinary.

The Norwegian player paused, turning to the source of the noise. What happened next escalated the scenario from merely unusual to downright humorous. With a smile on his face, Ruud quipped:

"I think it's my dog, actually."

The statement was met with laughter from the spectators, pausing the play for a moment as the audience laughed. After the laughter subsided, the game continued, but the ‘barking interruption’ became the moment that made the Bastad Open final a bit funnier.

After the match, it was a great display of camaraderie between the two final protagonists as they showed that they carry a lot of respect for each other, and Rublev didn't forget to praise his final opponent during the trophy ceremony.

"It is always great to win a title. At the end of the day, we have to lose almost every week, so this is one of two titles this year. It is a special feeling and the final was played in tough conditions, but I was lucky to have them. Casper hits with spin a lot, to play high and with this weather the ball did not really jump high and I think it helped me a bit. On top of that I played really well today."
