It seems that Dominic Thiem really likes courts at the 2022 Gijon Open as he recorded yet another win, this time against the fourth-seeded Francisco Cerundolo.
The 2020 US Open champion started with a very solid win over Joao Sousa when he won 6-2, 6-0 and then he also defeated Marcos Giron in three sets. After struggling earlier this year, Dominic Thiem showed that he's really happy with his game in Spain, especially after his first win.
After his first-round victory, in which he lost only two games, the Austrian said: "It was a great match for the first time since ages I had the feeling that the ratio between unforced errors and making the right pace, playing really aggressive, was right. Especially with the forehand, it was really good for basically the first time [since my injury], so I'm very happy about it," Thiem said.
Following two victories, Thiem was ready to record another one as he started his match against Cerundolo with a break. Yet, the Argentinian fought back and soon the score was tied at 3-3.
However, former world no. 3 added yet another break and after 42 minutes, he won the first set 6-4. In the second set, Thiem broke first again but was broken back in the very next game once again.
Yet, he managed to win on his opponent's serve twice more to win the match 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 34 minutes and advance to the 2022 Gijon Open semifinals where he will meet winner of the match between Andrey Rublev and Tommy Paul and fight for a spot in the final for a chance to get 250 points and $93,090 in prize money.
